Reserving Materials and Interlibrary Loan
You can reserve an item that Evergreen Park Public Library owns, but is currently checked out. Or you can borrow materials that Evergreen Park Library does not own from one of the member libraries in the south and west suburbs belonging to the Metropolitan Library System (MLS). MLS is a cooperative of public, college, school, and special libraries in Cook, DuPage and Will counties. If an item is unavailable in MLS, we can expand the search to other systems in Illinois. Feature videos carry a charge of $.50 cents per item; otherwise there is no charge for this service. We can even request materials from libraries throughout the United States as long as the owning library is willing to lend them. There is a $3.00 fee to obtain materials from outside of Illinois. You will be notified by telephone when the item arrives at Evergreen Park Library for pick up.
SWAN (System-Wide Automated Network)
SWAN is the shared online catalog of MLS. The catalog lists more than 1 million titles of books, cassettes, magazines, CDs, videos and other library materials. It shows which library owns a particular item and if the item is available. The SWAN catalog can be accessed in the library or from our web site.
You can reserve items via the library catalog, whether they are owned by the Evergreen Park Public Library or another library in SWAN. If the computer catalog shows the item on shelf at Evergreen Park Library, please call the library and the item will be held at the Circulation desk 5 days for pick up. Call the library if a title is not listed in the computer catalog. Most likely it can be obtained from another source.
Renewing Materials
Library materials can be renewed, whether they are owned by the Evergreen Park Public Library or another library in SWAN. As a rule, most library materials owned by Evergreen Park Library can be renewed twice. The exceptions are videos and DVDs, and items on reserve for another patron. Please remember, the owning library gets to make the rules regarding loan periods and renewals. Library materials can be renewed one of three ways:
- In person
- Over the telephone, as long as the item is not more than
one week overdue
- Over the Internet, through the SWAN Online Catalog
